Energy-generation / Energy-storage”-type EV Charging Systems to Provide Renewable Energy to Japan's

Introduction

Nichicon Corporation is providing "energy-generation/energy-storage"-type EV charging stations to two roadside stations (highway rest areas) in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. To be installed at the Seaside Takahama and Natasho roadside stations, the systems generate carbon-free solar power that is stored and combined with power from the grid to rapidly charge EVs (electric vehicles) and to power necessities such as LED lighting. Nichicon is also providing the same type of system to Kinoko no Mori park and to the Joho Kosaten information center, both also in Fukui Prefecture.
Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) is intent on making the 987* roadside stations throughout Japan into temporary evacuation shelters for times of disaster. With roadside stations being equipped with facilities such as independent power generation units and portable restrooms so that they can act as local emergency shelters, Nichicon's "energy-generation/energy-storage"-type EV charging stations can be used not just to charge environmentally friendly EVs, but also to act as stable sources of emergency power in case of a disaster. This sale, Nichicon's first of a charging system to a roadside station, brings our technologies to the assistance of the local government's of Takahama Town and Oi Town, whose aim is to provide dependable power in times of emergency.

Background of Development

With the environment a topic of increasing concern, efforts to reduce society’s carbon emissions are in full swing worldwide. The automotive industry is placing particular focus on this issue as Japanese, North American, and European car manufacturers develop and mass-produce EVs. To facilitate the dissemination of EVs, Nichicon provides the necessary infrastructure technologies with products including EV in-vehicle modules and EV charging systems. Thanks to our range of technological expertise in this field, we have received orders and inquiries from highway departments, public parks boards, local governments, and private enterprise, to name just a few.
Under its basic environmental plan (formulated in November 2008), the Fukui Prefectural government is placing top priority on a project for dissemination of the next generation of energy-efficient cars. The purchase of the Nichicon “energy-generation/energy-storage”-type EV charging stations shows that the government is willing to take concrete action on its desire to protect the environment. By providing EV charging stations combining solar power generation and power storage functions to evacuation shelters and isolated islands that depend on an independent power grid, Nichicon is helping to build a brighter future.

Main Features

  • Carbon-free charging using solar power generation
Clean energy generated by solar power is stored in the power storage bank, and this stored energy is used to charge EVs. No carbon is generated by this process.
  • Power available even during blackouts
Even when the public utility is down due to a natural disaster, the power storage function ensures that LED lighting, AC 100V sockets, and other necessities have the power they need to continue running.
  • Power storage function means power is always available for charging
While solar power generation is at the mercy of the weather, efficiently accumulating energy in storage banks ensures a stable supply of power for charging. Thanks to the power storage function, there's always power available for charging EVs, whatever the weather.
